Persona Segments

How Tenera creates, manages, and uses persona segments to represent target users in research.

Persona Segments are named groups of synthetic users that represent the audiences you care about. They keep simulations focused and make reports easier to compare across runs.

Set this up before important research. Tenera can generate personas automatically, but reviewed segments produce sharper and more trustworthy findings.

Creating a segment

In the app, go to Project → Persona Segments.

  1. Click New Segment.
  2. Name the audience in plain language.
  3. Add 3–5 personas with clear names and descriptions.
  4. Save the segment and use it in future simulations.

You can also review personas created from the Knowledge Base and organize them into the segments you want to study.

Writing good persona descriptions

A useful persona description includes:

  • Role and context — who they are and what their day-to-day looks like.
  • Goals — what they are trying to accomplish with your product.
  • Pain points — what frustrates them or slows them down.
  • Decision criteria — what would make them trust, adopt, reject, or pay for the product.
  • Technical comfort — how comfortable they are with software and new workflows.

Example:

"Maya is a 34-year-old product manager at a 50-person B2B SaaS company. She runs 2–3 user interviews per month but struggles to find participants. She is comfortable with tools like Notion and Figma but does not write code. Her main goal is to validate feature ideas before committing engineering time."

The more specific and grounded in your real customers, the better. Upload customer research to your Knowledge Base first so personas can draw from real evidence.

Naming segments

Name segments by the reason the group behaves differently, not by a vague trait.

For detailed naming rules, see the Naming Guide.

Using segments in simulations

When starting a simulation, choose the segment that best matches the decision. A pricing question may need budget-sensitive buyers; an onboarding question may need new users; an enterprise security question may need evaluators or admins.

If you are not sure which audience matters most, run the same question across two focused segments and compare the report patterns.

Persona memory

Personas can accumulate memory from prior sessions, imported behavioral evidence, or field notes. Memory helps future simulations stay consistent with what that persona has already said or done.

Use persona profiles to review the current summary, inspect supporting evidence, and confirm that memory is still relevant before reusing the persona in a high-stakes study.

Tips

  • 3–5 personas per segment is usually enough diversity without diluting signal.
  • Create separate segments for materially different audiences, such as free vs. paid, admin vs. end user, or new vs. experienced customer.
  • Keep persona descriptions concrete; avoid generic labels like "power user" without explaining the behavior.
  • Refresh segments after new Knowledge Base enrichment if your customer evidence has changed.
